A 2022 provincial law withdrew the Upper York plan and mandated a Lake Ontario-based replacement, the North York-Durham expansion.
The Newmarket pumping station upgrade is scheduled for 2028, with later Newmarket components through 2041.
Under the 2023 and 2025 regional capacity assignments, 30,000 persons of capacity went to Aurora, Newmarket, and East Gwillimbury, contingent on Phase 1.
A joint application including Newmarket secured $140 million in 2024.
